What to do

Introduction to theme

In this episode, five of the Spanish children take turns to wave and say Hola (Hello) then they slide down a slide. Play this short section on the DVD for the children. [Or play clip here]

Ask the children to repeat each time a Spanish child says Hola. This interaction with the Spanish children could be done on an individual or group basis, or both. Play the section again if appropriate.

Activity

Now the children simply mimic what they have just seen, so they can practice saying Hola themselves. Use a slide if you have one, or the children could stand on a chair and jump/get off again for the next person’s turn.

You could convert this activity into a relay, starting with volunteers. And when one of the children says Hola the rest of the class can say it back.

Extension 1

As with the previous activity, you could ask the children about the Spanish children:

To help you do this, use the whiteboard resources of the Spanish children and a simple listen and repeat activity so the children can get used to the sound of Spanish children’s names:

To check the children’s understanding, ask them these questions:

Extension 2

Call out ‘Hearts!’ for the children to reply ‘Nieve’, or ‘Stars!’ for the children to reply ‘Antonio’.

Remember to praise the children for their efforts with the praise words from this episode.

Note: When the Spanish children appear on their own in Speekee, they will have these unique ‘wallpapers’ behind them as a way of helping confirm/identify who they are.

Extension 3

For more practice of the same language, here’s a quick relay game.

The children stand in a line (or two lines) and take turns running up to you and saying Hola.

You say Hola in return to the child, who then runs to the back of the line.

If played with two lines, the ‘winning’ team is the one in which all the children in the line have run up to you, said Hola and returned to the back of the line.
