Each unit contains a short montage with sights and sounds of Spanish culture and tradition. We see two children experiencing these things; help your children to imagine life in Spain and therefore engage with these elements of the programme. The montage for this unit is La Feria ('The Fair').
The montages are designed to provide moments of reflection. The language content is brief, and not the primary focus here.
First, ask the children about things we would find at the fairground. Their answers may include: dodgems; big wheel; candyfloss; coconut shy; shooting gallery; hook a duck; carousel.
Ask some questions such as:
Explain that in parts of Spain, the town fair, or 'feria', is a regular occurrence and fun event. Next, show the montage from episode one. Focus the children's observation by telling them that there will be a little quiz afterwards.

Montage quiz (children can work individually or in small 'teams' to answer questions):
You can illustrate the answers using the whiteboard.
Print enough copies of the downloadable picture of a carousel horse for one per child, or one between two, if children are working in pairs.
Children decorate the carousel horses – this could either be by painting or colouring, or by gluing different textures (e.g. tissue paper, pieces of fabric) onto the horse to make a collage.
Make a display of the carousel. Pictures could be put on the wall. NB if using this method, it will be useful to decorate half the number of copies of the horses facing one way and the other half facing the opposite way, so that you can create a circle of horses when making the display.
Alternatively, make a 3D carousel by suspending the horse picture from a hoop or even a large, colourful umbrella, to give a carousel effect. If using this method, photocopy the pictures onto thin card (or stick the paper copies onto card) and ask the children to decorate both sides. Hang the hoop or umbrella in your Spanish corner, if you have one, or just in the classroom.
Children work in small groups.
Ask each group to choose a fairground activity and then design and make this (either in picture, collage or 3D model form). Make a fairground display in your Spanish corner, or classroom.
Children work individually or in pairs and decorate their carousel horses.
When Spanish fairs come to town they often do so to coincide with the town’s annual festival. Festivals are a big part of Spanish culture and many of them not only have their own unique flavour, but are known worldwide. Read more about some of the most popular at http://www.speekee.co.uk/resources/spanish/festivals.php.
Note:
You’ll see at the beginning of the montage sequence that four montage previews are shown, then one of them opens up to fill the screen. A game the children can play is to guess which montage is about to appear, as in each episode four different montages will be previewed but only one of them will be shown.
